Bike News Roundup: US traffic deaths jump 13.5% over last year

It’s time for the weekly Bike News Roundup! As eagerly awaited in Seattle as the Blue Angels (with 1/1,000,000,000 the noise!). As always, this is an open thread.

First up, I have no idea what to think of this:

Probably not the most stylish wheels on the planet:

Since this is an open thread…

This is my first summer living in Seattle. I have noticed a marked increase in the number of helmet-less cyclists since the weather turned nice. Most of my riding takes place on the Burke-Gilman, so perhaps it’s a localized phenomenon, or maybe it’s the same percentage of riders, but there are just more in absolute terms. Either way, I’ve been noticing it.

My question is, do cops actually ticket for not wearing helmets? Is it a primary offense, or does a cyclist have to commit another infraction (blowing a stop sign, whatever) to get “pulled over” before he can be ticketed for not wearing a helmet? Occasionally I have friends come to visit, and I have more spare bikes than spare helmets. I’d like to know how big a (financial) risk it is to loan out a bike without a helmet, leaving aside issues of personal safety.

  4. nice compilation of bike articles. interesting to see a lot of commentary about the development of law in protecting cyclists especially like the tyee article. and @matthew, the cops are pretty laid back, but I’ve gotten a ticket for riding downtown without a helmet.
