Trail Alert 8/16-18: Big Burke-Gilman Trail detour planned through UW

Map of the detour route via Pend Oreille Road, Mason Road and Rainier Vista.UW will detour a significant stretch of the Burke-Gilman Trail between Pend Oreille Rd and Rainier Vista this weekend for tree removal work.

The detour will be in place starting 6 a.m. Friday morning and going through Sunday evening. Work hours are 7 a.m. through 3:30 p.m.

The route is largely on-road, but hopefully traffic won’t be much of an issue since school is not in session.

Speaking of detours, does anyone know if there is an official detour around Myrtle Edwards for Hemp Fest?

Knowing our mayor, probably she has issued a decree that Elliott is the official detour.

That reminds me… the Hemp Fest folks at least need to keep the W Thomas ped bridge over Elliot Ave open.

As an aside, I’d love to see news coverage about what actually happened to the rest of the UW redesign of the Burke-Gilman. They were building it, and then it just…stopped?

Were they planning to redesign more of it? I wasn’t aware of this

Yes, I believe it was planned and funded.

This article indicates the funding isn’t available until 2021-2025:

I’ll have to look into timing. The State funding will be doled out over 16 years, and I don’t remember exactly where the UW is on the list.

Adds a roughly 50 ft hill as well.
