Happy Bike to School Day!

A child biking on a residential street.

We had a lovely Bike to School Day today. There were 68 bikes parked at Green Lake Elementary, and even more kids rode in on a parent’s bike. There was so much joy and so many proud kids. Biking to school is just the best.

Since my kid has been regularly biking to school on her own, her traffic safety awareness, bike handling and hill-climbing skills have all improved dramatically. But so has her sense of responsibility, which is not an effect I was anticipating. We stressed that if she wants to bike in the street, she would need to stay focused on being safe the entire time. She rose to the challenge.

By the way, if you’re a GLE family in Wallingford/Tangletown, email me about starting up a bike bus! [email protected]

Kudos for encouraging your daughter to bike to school. I biked to elementary school (~1 mile) every day from second grade onwards. I was part of a biking school bus (though we didn’t have that name for it). I met two other girls at a nearby corner and we biked to school together.

Most kids in the area walked or biked to school by themselves. In fact, we kinda pitied the kids whose parents drove them. Looking back, it was a wonderful way to gain independence and responsibility, same as your daughter is experiencing!

I was out yesterday around when school starts (actually not far from Green Lake Elementary), and did notice a surprising number of young backpack-toting bikers on the road. Great that they all got a chance to experience the joys of bike commuting – hopefully it inspires them to do it more often.
