Bike Master Plan calls for a better Ship Canal Crossing as part of the Ballard High Capacity Transit project
Bike Master Plan calls for a better Ship Canal Crossing as part of the Ballard High Capacity Transit project

The Ballard High Capacity Transit project is holding its final early public meeting Thursday to discuss route options to finally connect the neighborhood with truly fast and expandable transit service.

Event Details:
Ballard High School Commons
1418 NW 65th Street, Seattle, WA 98117
5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Thursday, December 5th
Opening remarks begin at 6:30 p.m.

There are many options for the new transit line to cross the ship canal, likely the trickiest part of the whole plan. We fell in love with Bruce Nourish’s idea of building a new car and freight crossing at 3rd Ave NW (with bike facilities, of course), which would free up the Fremont Bridge to become focused on biking, walking, transit and local car traffic.

But there are certainly several options for a new crossing that would greatly improve bike safety and access across the canal.

Seattle Transit Blog has had great coverage of the options initially proposed, including one of their own (Option 9 is STB’s combination of the best parts from Sound Transit’s options). Thursday, you will get a chance to see a more refined set of options and provide feedback.

From Seattle Transit Blog:

This Thursday, December 5th, ”Sound Transit and the City of Seattle are hosting the third and final open house to present updated concepts for new rail transit between Ballard and downtown.”

Staff and decision makers from Sound Transit and the City of Seattle want to hear your comments and answer your questions. By attending and commenting, you can help to make sure that all options are as fast and as reliable as possible and to facilitate future expansion to other neighborhoods.

I hate to say it, but this money would move more people if it was spent on bicycle infrastructure all around for city.
