Weekend Guide: Critical Mass anniversary, Sustainable Ballard Fest + Bike to Beacon Food Forest

Here’s a look at some of the bikey things going on this weekend. Did I miss anything? Let us know in the comments. And remember, you can always post bike events to our events calendar. It’s free, fast and easy.

Critical Mass Anniversary

Seattle’s Critical Mass has been relatively small in recent years, but the rides remain popular all around the nation and the world. This is the 20th Anniversary of Critical Mass in San Fransisco, and cities are celebrating everywhere.

Like always, Seattle Critical Mass meets at 5:30 p.m. the last Friday of the month at Westlake Park.

There’s also a chance to join the Bike Swarm, which meets at 3 in Occidental Park.

Sustainable Ballard Fest

Family bikes, a Ballard neighborhood greenway scavenger hunt and more.

Bike to Beacon Food Forest

The first trees planted at the Beacon Food Forest will be delivered by bike trailer. Join Beacon BIKES and the rest of the folks behind the Beacon Food Forest for a day of planting. From Beacon BIKES:

On Saturday Sept 29 (10-2) the Beacon Food Forest is breaking ground (see info below). Beacon BIKES has been invited to participate by getting the trees and equipment to the site by bike following our Greenway Route. This will be a great opportunity to celebrate the Greenway in the “Greenest” way possible! Our Greenway route goes straight through the Food Forest so we have some serious synergy with our foraging friends.

Campaign for Rep. Dunshee by bike with Cascade

Cascade is supporting Rep. Hans Dunshee by biking door-to-door in his district Saturday. Seattle Bike Blog is not necessarily endorsing Dunshee (we haven’t done any research in the race), but a door-knocking campaign by bike is awesome. Details:

But Rep. Dunshee is facing a tough election against a challenger who does not support providing everyone with the freedom to bicycle. Pundits expect it to be a tight race.

Hans needs our help. That’s why we’re coming together on Saturday, September 29, to ride with Rep. Dunshee and speak directly with voters at their front doors about why Hans is the best candidate to build a better future for Washington.

We will be meeting at the Rite Aid parking lot in Mill Creek (3202 132nd St SE, Mill Creek,‎ WA‎ 98012) at 10 a.m. for a brief bike-bell (canvassing with your bike) tutorial and then we’ll hit the streets for a couple of hours to knock on doors and meet our neighbors. If you’ve never canvassed before, don’t worry – it’s easy, fun and we provide you with everything you need. All you need to do is show up with your bike (or not if you just want to walk), comfortable clothes, some water and a pannier or backpack to carry materials.

If we want a Washington where everyone has the freedom to safely ride their bike, we need elected officials committed to building this future. We need elected officials like Rep. Hans Dunshee.

And if we don’t step up and ride for Hans, we may lose one of our strongest champions in the legislature. We hope you can join us.

Please click here to RSVP and join us on Saturday, Sept. 29, to bike-bell with Hans >>

Hope to see you on the 29th.

Bike Swarm is a bunch of wannabe anarchists riding on the coat tails of the popularity of critical mass, who basically hijacked the event and tried to turn it into something unpleasant and destructive. They turn more people away from cycling than anyone else I’ve ever seen, including those of us who showed up for critical mass. So to the Bike Swarm, if they can read; go screw yourselves, but make sure you use a condom because we don’t need any more of you.
