Meetings tonight to discuss Ballard and Green Lake bike lanes

This is late notice again (sorry!), but SDOT will be at two separate meetings at 7 p.m. tonight (May 11) to discuss projects on 20th Ave NW in Ballard and N/NE 65th St in Green Lake.

Green Lake

SDOT representatives will be at the Green Lake Community Council meeting at Hearthstone Chapel (6720 E Green Lake Way N) from 7-9 p.m. tonight to discuss changes to N/NE 65th St, Woodlawn and N 64th St intended to connect Ravenna Blvd to E Green Lake Way N.

Bike lanes and sharrows will be installed this summer. “Sharrows” are shared-lane pavement markings that guide bicyclists to the best place to ride and help motorists expect to see and share the lane with bicyclists.

The changes are being made to help bicyclists get to the bike lanes on NE Ravenna Blvd and the bike lanes on East Green Lake Way North. Changes include:

  • an uphill bike lane and downhill sharrow on N/NE 65th St between Ravenna Blvd and 1st Ave N.
  • sharrows on both sides of the street between 1st Ave NE and Woodlawn Ave N.
  • an uphill bike lane and downhill sharrow on Woodlawn Ave N and on the block of N 64th St between Woodlawn Ave N and East Green Lake Way N.

Ballard

SDOT representatives will be at the Ballard District Council meeting at the Ballard Library (5614 22nd Ave NW) from 7-9 p.m. tonight to discuss changes to 20th Ave NW connecting Market St to NW 65th.

From the Ballard News Tribune:

Then, Virginia Coffman from the Seattle Department of Transportation will be presenting a plan to make changes to 20th Avenue NW this summer to make “bicycling easier and safer in the Ballard Neighborhood.”

“In an effort do this; SDOT will install bike lanes on 20th Ave NW between NW Market St and NW 65th St,” the project’s website states.

To make way for these bike lanes on either side of the street, SDOT will be removing the center turn lane on 20th Ave NW between NW 65th St and NW Market St.

According to SDOT this change will not affect traffic flow or inhibit access to residential side streets as this particular section sees a low number of cars.

“Parking will not be affected by these changes. There are no bus routes on this part of 20th Ave NW and the street is not a designated truck route. These changes are happening to make 20th Ave NW a complete street so that it works better for all forms of transportation,” according to SDOT.

Please observe the 10 mph max speed limit when biking inside Green Lake, especially in the most congested areas. Thanks
