Weekend Guide: Get a free Muffin on Melrose Friday morning + BikeBot + Ballard Crit

Central Seattle Greenways (of which I am a founder) received a Small & Simple Grant from the Department of Neighborhoods to clean-up, promote and improve the Melrose Trail on Capitol Hill.

One of the group’s plans is a series of simple muffin giveaways they’re calling Muffins on Melrose. Some people will be hanging out on the Melrose Trail (in the park between Lakeview and Melrose Ave on Capitol Hill) Friday morning giving free muffins to passersby. It’s a chance to talk about what people would like to see happen in the overgrown park, spread the word about the Melrose Promenade project and lighten someone’s day with a smile and muffin.

Like Muffins? Want a better Melrose? Join us for our very first Muffins on Melrose this Friday! At our Muffins on Melrose event, we will greet our neighbors on their morning commutes with pastries and coffee, and chat with them about the Melrose Promenade project. We will be stationed on the Melrose Trail connecting Melrose Avenue East and Lakeview Boulevard East from 7am – 9am on Friday, June 1. Please let us know if you would like to join us this Friday and help spread the word!

CSGreenways is joining forces with the Melrose Promenade Advisory Committee to host a series of volunteer community cleanup work parties in the park around the trail this summer. Community input will also guide some planning work to improve the park and trail atmosphere. The long-term goal is to improve the walking and biking atmosphere along the entirety of Melrose Ave from Lakeview to Pike, creating an enjoyable public space along Capitol Hill’s western edge (what one committee member called “Capitol Hill’s Front Porch”).

The first community cleanup is scheduled for June 10. Please join us!

Got a sweet bike sound system? Your help is needed Saturday

I got a call the other day from Ande of BikeBot, an Austin-based crew touring from Vancouver to southern California, throwing bike yoga and robot-themes group ride parties all the way.

I promised I would try to find someone with a bike sound system to help them lead an evening robot ride. So if you are that person, email me at [email protected].

They are also planning a bike ride finishing with live music yoga from Go W/ The Flow:

All times and locations are TBD. I’ll keep you all updated here and via Twitter and Facebook.

UPDATE: The Go W/ the Flow yoga ride will begin at 12 p.m. at Woodland Park Shelter 5 and do a loop. The yoga class will begin at 1:30 p.m. where the ride started. Tracey Gramenz of RAW Retreats will be helping to lead the ride.

Also, they are leaving town Monday and heading to Portland. They would love more company if you want to bike with them.

Ballard Crit Saturday

Road racers will take over the streets of Ballard for the 19th Annual Second Ascent Twilight Criterium Saturday. The races start at 3:30 p.m., ending with the pros at 7:30.

Details from the Ballard News Tribune:

More than 350 cyclists will race through the heart of Ballard at breath-taking speeds next week at the 19th annual Second Ascent Twilight Criterium.

Commonly called “The Ballard Crit”, it is one of Seattle’s classic bike races and a favorite among both racers and spectators.

A criterium takes all the excitement of a road race — team tactics, climbs, descents, sharp turns, and sprints — and concentrates it into an aggressive, high-speed race along a single, spectator-friendly urban block.

I’m sure I missed some stuff. What’s going on this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

That Melrose park just needs a decent mow once a week, or else a replanting to make a city meadow out of it. Right now it’s homeless junk, beer bottles, a couple of lawn chairs. I’d suggest a pea patch but it’s pretty steep and it’s way too close to the freeway.

  2. Just talked with the 1Love folks and their project sounds awesome! Looks like we’ll be doing a ride starting and ending at the S. end of Greenlake, but details will be finalized tomorrow morn. Even if you’re not into yoga, it seems like a good idea to try a round with them. There will be beatboxing.

  3. […] looks like Go w/ the Flow will be in Seattle this weekend and then they’re headed to Portland next. No word yet on when they’ll be here but […]
